It looks like AMD have just revealed their next graphics card line up at Computex a few hours ago. https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graph...-RX-480-will-launch-199-more-5-TFLOPS-compute It looks like from early reports that it will be aiming its sights at the new nvidia gtx 1070 performance wise but at a lower price tag. As always we will have to wait and see just how this new line up of cards performs once the review channels get a hold of them and whether or not they plan on releasing a real high end card to compete with the GTX 1080. I think they are aiming for a release date of the end of this month and a price tag starting at $199. Jason.
hm, just read a news about it... seems this card will be placed somwhere between the R9 390 and R9 390X. The Pricetag ($199 + VAT) would fit in that, too and fits to the typical new lineup-numbering --> R9 290 < R9 380 > R9 290X. That card is definitely not a competitor for the bigger Nivida-Cards like GTX 1070 and 1080 in the High-End-Class, but for the Performance-Cards in which Nvidia will release their other models like the GTX 1060 and so on probably based on the GP 106-Chip...
Regarding the raw performance of more than 5 tflops this could be a great card, especially for that price, as long as AMD can transform that into real world perormance in games. Checking the comparison list, the 390X is almost twice as fast as a GTX 970 regarding their raw perormance. This advantage in pure tflops perormance has been there since the HD7000 GPUs, but in the end, the gaming performance was always much lower and the Geforce GPUs where faster in games with lower raw performance. Finally, whe have to wait until the release to see what AMD really can deliver...
I hope that single bolded and underline text in the quote is a typo, because the 380 isn't even in the same league as the 290 series.
Some german magazine tells the RX 480 should be comparable to a R9 390X... So, if this turns out true, the price is the only really great point about it, as the TDP is comparable to a significantly faster GTX 1070 and slightly lower than a GTX 970's TDP... Regarding the fact that, the last few years, AMD's hardware was always estimated to be more powerful than the product really was once released, I guess AMD will not get back to the top this year. I read somewhere they don't even want to compete in the 'high end' range with NVidia...
On paper RX480 looks like a killer value for money offer. But if that translates to real world performance remains to be seen.
