I'm building a desktop system to replace my laptop for gaming purposes. I only play race sims and at the moment mainly R3E. I'm using an old i5 optiplex system which is pretty capable but needs a new GPU. I've narrowed it down to either a 1030 or 1050ti (both in low profile variants). Other system details are i5 3470 3.1ghz 8gb ram.

Can anyone who runs these two cards tell me what fps at which graphics settings you get at 1080p?

I realize the 1050ti will be better but if the 1030 can sustain 60fps at high settings then it becomes a viable option as it is about half the price and has a lower power consumption (which is also a potential issue)

    Thanks

I am using a 1050ti with my i5-2500 and would highly recommend that option
the 1030 is about equal to my old GTX650ti, and it was playable, at low settings
the GTX 1050ti was worth the money, and performs great at 1080p high settings 60fps

Never understand why gamers buy entry level gfx cards, I'd rather buy 2nd hand last generation enthusiast level cards?
    Makes no sense to me.

Because it's not always possible. They might have old dell sff (optiplex) that will only fit a low profile card that is only powered through PCI-E by sub 300W PSU. And not every one wants or can buy a bigger more power full PC

minimum specs for RRRE is a dual core at 2.4 and a GTX 460
so a 1030 would be fine with a core2duo or dual core Pentium
but the OP has an i5-3470, so a 1050ti would be a near perfect match

Fair comment but cases and power supplies aren't that hard to come by, second hand etc, cheap, and will give you a less compromised way to move forward rather than limiting your upgrade and game quality/enjoyment paths.

Hi, thanks for the replies everyone. I went for the 1050ti and its great, hitting an average 90fps will everything maxed out. As to why I don't buy a better card/computer...budget basically. The optiplex system has cost me £300 altogether and now does everything I want it to. I will never go to triple screens as I don't have the room and VR isnt a viable option for me at the moment. This machine is just night and day from the laptop I was using, I'm very happy with how it has turned out.
