I'm looking at getting a new gpu and am looking at the gtx 1080ti or rtx 2080...both are comparable performance wise. I basically only do racing games on my pc..is rtx required for raceroom (in the future) ac and /or acc ?
I have a RTX 2080 and i say let the price determine your choice. I bought mine in the used market (unused)
RTX will never be required, but ACC most likely will support Ray Tracing in the future. And you won't get that on 1080ti. When it comes to RaceRoom - who knows? But definitely not in near future
Ray tracing is coming to GTX 1060 and above in an April NV driver update, obviously it will impact performance and it won't be the full experience like a 2080ti but it may help the decision, personally I would find a good used 1080ti for the price. https://www.tomsguide.com/us/nvidia-pascal-gtx-ray-tracing,news-29659.html
I am also upgrading, rtx range cards except maybe the 2060 are out of my budget, it's looking more like a 2nd hand 1080. I think if you only play racing Sims and you only use 1080p or 1440p resolution I would go with the 10 series. If you go up to 4k and more demanding games then the 20 series. Not sure about ACC but no other racing sims will ever use all the features like Ray tracing that the new RTX series bring.
hmmm, I wouldn't be to sure on that. If that feature persists, it will come to other sims as well. But the day that we see other racing-sims with raytracing, the 20-series will be outdated already. And if I get it right, the 20-Series is only a starting-point for Raytracing and actually not powerful enough for a wide-spread use of that feature.
If I have to decide to buy a 1080 ti or a 2080 I would chosse the 2080´. 1080ti isn't available new anymore and the prices for used ones are very high (here) So a new one is not that much higher in prices but it is new, there is full warranty and so on. Never know, what others do with their hardware. And the 2080 is mostly a bit faster than a 1080ti.
For best bang for buck, I suggest never buying used PC parts. The lifetime of PC parts exceeds their relevance of performance in time by 2-4 times. GPUs used for mining are not to be afraid of, if you get products that still have manufacturer warranty (thats the case with all Pascal cards) 1080ti only benchmarks 4% lower FPS than 2080 and 15% lower than 2080 ti You can find used 1080ti beginning from 450€ with reference design, while 2080 is 800€ and 2080ti 1200€ new in the store. Think yourself is spending 77% more is worth the 4% FPS
I have seen 2080 performing at my pals place and it's performance is awesome. I tried it in Dirt rally 2
Never had an issue with 2nd hand parts, buy wisely, I've built a lot of systems from 2nd hand parts that are still going strong, mine included, only thing I buy new is SSD's, most RAM has lifetime transferable warranty and if you buy EVGA or MSI GPU's or mobo's they are warrantied from production date and serial number so warranty is transferred.
This, i have always done the same, my current gpu, ram, mobo, psu and cpu all 2nd user and not one issue with either. Ex mining cards, my current gpu is, altho i was lucky it was 6 months old when the miner owner fell on hard times, i bought 3 off him and sold 2 on ebay for enough to make mine a virtual freebie @ £75.
I can only tell you that I have a 2080 and an Oculus Rift. All GPU related things on max and it is performing with 90 FPS here. Rift has only 90 or 45 FPS. Shadows are CPU intense, not GPU so it's switched off, because 8 cores on 5 Ghz are too less for Raceroom in VR
That's pretty disappointing to read. (Btw I don't think RR can utilize 8 cores, that's the main problem...)
If u find a 1080 ti for a reasonable price (less expensive than 2080) then yeah but if new RTX and old GTX have the same price then the new hardware would be the obvious choice.
