Im in my second season as an F1 follower and still dont know all details yet...question....

When the winner crosses the finish line for the checkered flag, he normally slows down and does his victory lap. Of course that means he becomes a hazard for those lapped cars still racing. If there is a battle still going on among lapped cars, whats the procedure in this case? Do all remaining cars complete the full race length even with victory laps going on?

Thanks in advance. Could not easily find this via google.

    hi,
Once the lead car takes the chequered flag the race is deemed to be over.

Thanks - So any ongoing battle for 2nd and 3rd (or any other position) once the winner hits the checkered is null and void? Seems like a missed opportunity for additional drama to me....

Hypothetical situation: last race of season, 2 drivers are 1 point apart in points standings for top spot, and in p4 and p5, only 0.3 seconds apart when the race winner (some other car) crosses finish line for p1...

If im a teammate or fan of either driver, id want to see that p4/p5 battle to determine f1 champion go down to the finish line...so in current rules noted above, it would come down to where the cars are when winner crosses???

when other cars cross the line after the leader that is where they finish as well,so if you are 2nd after the leader=2nd and so on ....if you are 2 laps down at the finish your race is over ....you don't keep going.

No, it is nothing like that. The race ends after the cars cross the finish line. The scenario you proposed in the first post is not feasible, because any backmarkers behind the race winner would also have crossed the finish line after him, and at that point their race is also finished and they also slow down.
I'm not aware of any type of racing which is not like that.

Thank you sir and @vitormazzi for the explanation - this makes sense now. So everyone races only until the physical finish line, regardless of lap, once the winner crosses

I got the impression from the first post that once the winner crosses, all racing is stopped...clear that is not the case now.

its not different than in sim racing and in this game - as the leader crosses the line then its a last lap for everyone else.
they can still overtake each other in this lap and their finish position is determined by the order they cross the finish line on that last lap.
