I'm still waiting for ASUS to finally update their BIOSes... Looks like they started to working on them this week, because they posted wip versions for a few mobos on the forum.
with a bit of fresh air in the room, a slightly better run for me: 1080Ti to come today... Wonder how much it will change the results...
Now I thought I'd give it a try on my Win 10. Very interesting results! Process Explorer now looks like this: And in fullscreen it even reaches above 11%! Resulting in: Again, i7 2600k @ 4.4 GHz, 2133 MHz CL11. Windowed: Fullscreen: That's a massive improvement, lol! Windowed: - Win7 = 209.0 fps - Win10 = 237.9 fps Fullscreen: (btw, Win 10 fullscreen optimizations on/off was the same score!) - Win7 = 213.0 fps - Win10 = 252.4 fps
Yeah I think there is actually still performance on the table for me, i have plenty of thermal and power headroom but it will not boost over 4.2 even with +200MHz set. Might come with more mature BIOSes I also still can't use the ryzen balanced profile, it just makes the CPU always idle at 4.2 GHz 1.4V, even in CPU-z. with windows balanced it's nicely idle at 0.9V 3GHz, hope the early adopter bugs will be ironed out soon
I decided to do some number crunching in order to get estimated values from CPUs that aren't on our list. So I tried to correlate our fps results with benchmarks from cpubenchmark. First conclusion, not surprisingly, was that our fps correlate a lot better with their single thread benchmark(87% correlation) than their passmark(69% correlation). However I was able to get a better correlation by merging those benchmarks. I got the correlation to 90.5% by multiplying the single thread value by 32 and the passmark by 1. Then I multiplied everything by 0,00275 in order to get values close to the fps we were getting. Obviously we're comparing OC'd processors with non-OC, different system environments and using only 2 variables so there is some discrepancy but I found this useful to find the ideal CPU for my case.
So! 1080Ti installed in the watercooling loop and shows that test is definitely 100% CPU bound. Though with better ambient temps slightly higher score but within margin of error.
To be honest mate with that cooler your cpu is wasted, not literally, but there is so much more performance you could unlock with a better cooler, my not so humble opinion.
@Larry Foster for the price of a medium range AIO if it fits your computer case I would go for Noctua NH-U12A https://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-u12a It is compact but a beast of a cooler.
Down to your budget, case space and how cool you want to be. I use a Corsair h105, keeps my cpu under 80 running a realbench 15 min stress test, although with the recent very hot weather that is up to 90+ but still runs trouble free. It is down to you, you could go water or you could go air, as i said, budget, case space or your imagination, search for a few reviews, water typically beats air for cooling. Have a read here, reviews of a fair few air and water coolers https://www.guru3d.com/articles-categories/cooling.html The choice is vast, making the right one is key, dont go for a no name cheapo just because it was cheap, a quality name, proven to perform, used or new is the only way to go. Good luck edit - to add currently using a Bequiet case which is shit for cooling, nice and quiet but 6-10 higher temps than my previous nzxt.
I have a Kraken x42 water cooler. Very great one to cool your cpu.. https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/nzxt-kraken-x42-review,13.html
I've got my 7700k under 80c at 5GHz Mate, not delidded it's fine as is. Didn't you say your 8700k is in the 90's?
Here, refer my last post. If mine was in the 90s I'd be concerned and looking to delid it. The 7700k is renowned for running hot even at stock so for my Noctua keeping a 5GHz OC under 80 is great.
Yes but we all know the 8700k is really a hot one. Lol. But about what I said about the heat of my cpu, it was my error. I had the driver set to silence mode. When it is set to that you totally won’t hear it and is nice for normal desktop applications etc. When I set it to performance mode the cpu is never above 82c even when it has to work hard. If I set it manually and full fan/cooling it freezes my CPU lol. But Then the fan noise is to loud for me as I sit in the livingroom with my setup. My wife does not care if it makes noise but I don’t like it. So normally I leave it on performance and that will cool enough. So forget what I said about the 90c temp. It was my fault.
This is how ive set my CPU fan speeds , that 60% is 950 rpm and for a Noctua its silent ! I can hear my HDD's before i hear my fans , lol and being that i have it hit 100% fan at 80C it never touches that so never gets heard
25c usually here give or take but i do run at 4.6 GHz daily just to keep it in the high 50 low 60's. Getting near 80 daily bothers me .
