The Green Hell awaited the eSports WTCC drivers for the third round of the season, and the longest track on the calendar showed itself from its toughest side. As usual, the event started with Division 2, where Nikita Shaposhnik took his second win of the season in his Citroen, followed by Hungarian Volvo driver Mark Vida. The battle was on for third though, between Guarini, Schelstraete , Razeyre and Hekman. The latter two had off-track-moments on the final lap, and then Schelstraete took the final podium position away from Guarini with a brave move coming down to the Hohenrain chicane.

In Division 1, qualifying already proved to be tough for several of the top drivers. Gergo Baldi and Norbert Leitner failed to set laptimes, Bence Bánki and Klaus Schulze even had to withdraw due to technical issues. It looked like EURONICS Gaming's Julian Kunze would take his third pole position in a row, but then Jan Stange, man of the race in Hungary, stole the pole away from Kunze with a 8:30.3. Kunze lined up second, ahead of Alexander Dornieden, Nikodem Wisniewski and newcomer Levente Toth.

Stange defended his lead at the start of the three lap race, while Dornieden passed Kunze immediately. Toth dropped way down the order after a bad start and contact on the grand prix circuit, while Wisniewski had to park his car after technical issues. At the front of the field, Kunze was trying hard to chase the leading Impact Racing duo, but in the triple right coming up to Wehrseifen, it all went wrong for him. He lost control of his Chevrolet, hit the barriers and had to retire. This promoted Kevin Siggy Rebernak, a newcomer from Austria in a Volvo, into a surprising podium position. Further back, Norbert Leitner was flying through the field to make up for his qualifying problems.

As the race settled down, Stange looked like he would take his first win of the season. But on the final lap, the German lost control of his car at Schwedenkreuz. He kept it out of the wall, but lost two positions to Dornieden and Rebernak. Dornieden, the championship leader, managed to take his first win of the year at the hardest track of them all, ahead of the impressive Rebernak and Stange. Thomas Petitjean finished in 4th position, and his teammate Tanguy Pedrazzoli was looking like he'd finish in 5th, but he crashed in the final corner of the race and dropped down to 19th. Portugese driver Diogo Velosa moved up to fifth on his debut.

With the top 10 reversed for race 2, it was Swedish driver Robin Fredriksson on pole, ahead of the Hungarian trio of Nagy, Nándori and Leitner and his brother Daniel Fredriksson. Nagy took the lead of the race early on, but it was Norbert Leitner who was flying through the field. By the end of the first lap, Leitner was already leading. But the blue danger, Jan Stange in his Volvo, had his eyes set on a victory. Stange passed driver after driver and found himself in second place pretty soon. Meanwhile, Julian Kunze, with a repaired car, showed what he is capable of and fought back into the top 10 after starting last. On the final lap, Leitner was 3 seconds ahead of Stange and it looked like the German could close in, but Leitner drove the lap of a champion and even extended his lead to 5 seconds at the line. The first victory for the Hungarian Honda driver, and an unlikely one, after not even setting a lap time in qualifying. Stange was second, and Alexander Dornieden, who drove a strong race once again, passed Nagy for the final podium spot on the final lap. Daniel Fredriksson rounded out the top five.

With these results, Dornieden has extended his gap in the championship standings. Fellow Impact Racing driver Stange is second now, ahead of Márk Nándori. But there are still seven events to come. The next online race will be on June 18th at Portimao, but there will also be a special on-site event at the Nordschleife before that, next Saturday.
