Aero damage is pretty obvious but what causes engine and transmission damage? Is it collisions, over--revving, poor gear changes or a combination of all the above?

When I have a small amount of engine damage (this as seen in AMG GT3) I get weird power delivery, seems to spike and spin the wheels and or momentarily cut out. Is this normal? I thought it was a spiking throttle pedal at first but input meter shows no issues....

All three of these will cause engine or transmission damage. Once you reach a certain amount of engine damage, the engine will start to misfire, which is what you are describing.
