Announcement trailer More info here: http://playracecraft.com/devblog/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Opinion piece starts here: Personally i like the concept but it could be better used in a rally/ hillclimb simulator, the idea of a different rally track every time really captures what rally is all about in my mind. But as a racing sim i see very little potential with the sim community a more arcady approach would bring more success for a track game.
For a rally dakar type game this would be really interesting approach, but for tarmac tracks I think mastering a "fixed" set is more fun, than having endless possibilities. I remember playing "moto racer" demo a lot with a friend (hot seat), and we were pushing each other further on the few tracks that came with the demo, and once we had the full game with the many tracks, there was too much choice
Its a game(he uses the word sim in an interview) where every track is procedurally generated to be different. personally i have always been interested in procedural generation. The first game to use this technique to generate a level was "Rogue" hence the genre is called "Rogue-like". so this will be the first Rogue-like Racer. any game that has a "seed" eg minecraft is procedurally generated.
A free tech demo is announced for those who have signed up for the newsletter here playracecraft.com . Also they talk about early access. note that everything other than the track generation is extremely early development and the basic rules for track layout are about the only thing they are currently settled on. some interesting points are There will be customisable cars by 1.0 similar to the game victory. There will be 3 environments on initial release and up to 24 by 1.0. You can race both ai and ghost on the tech demo.
I can see one aspect of this (possibly) being fun, and that's that all racers are green on every track. But at least for my part, a track rarely becomes fun / favorites right away, it evolves over time the more you learn the track. Many of my favorite tracks in R3E, I didn't like from the start. They grew on me the more time I spent on them. And thats what I think, at least for me this one will fall short.. .
