I think this is in discussion for a few years now but also I think that RaceRoom should consider an offline mode at least for single player.

BTW: After wondering I found the announcement for an emergency maintenance but this is not a discussion about the announcement.

Its allways recommendable to have a second sim as fallback alternative installed. :D

..And a third, fourth, and fifth.. We're spoilt for choice lately.

I'm getting to know rFactor2 a little better this evening.

This is what @Christian G wrote on discord:

An important aspect to consider is that certain crucial files are stored online and only downloaded when starting a session in order to keep them safe from tampering. Opening up the system to work offline would inevitably mean having to make compromises in that department. It's annoying at times like these but it's (also) done in order to ensure an environment that's as fair and secure for everyone as possible. But I'm sure the devs will analyse this event together with the service provider once we're back to normal operation and look into ways to prevent things like this in the future.

That's absolutely understandable, but on the other hand - does anyone care what people would do in offline mode? Let them tamper whatever they want, it won't affect others. And once the system is back online, the secured files are downloaded again and everything works as before.

Or does it effectively mean it's to prevent people from unlocking and using all the content while offline? But yeah, that's understandable too.

I have to disagree. If there would be an offline mode then RR would be cracked 5min later like rF2, Pcars 2, ACC.

Btw: Its not like theres a downtime 5 times a week for a couple hours. Do you really donĀ“t know what to do with your life for a couple hours ever 2-3 month when theres an update in progress ? :D

What exactly will be cracked? And how an offline mode will help it?

    Anything anyone can imagine...

An offline mode won't help with this. And I don't think anybody said so.

Like cracking a netcode when there's no connection?

The game was already cracked, both for online races and competition leaderboards, and the absence of an offline mode didn't stop it. So, what exactly will be at even bigger risk? "Something" or "anything" doesn't sound convincing enough to me...

Sorry, that was bad wording. What I meant was: "How can an offline mode help hackers crack the online portions of the game?"

Like I said, I acknowledge that access to content will be cracked pretty fast and I understand that it may be unacceptable for developers/publisher. But is that it or is there something else?

I'd think the content question is a big enough reason, also thinking how quickly content then finds its ways as mods into other games ;)

Sadly you're right. To much content gets stolen and leeched. But thats a Problem since F1 challenge 99-02
