I could be wrong here, but from what i've seen, if auto clutch is off you can still shift and drive without the clutch, but if you do a race with damage on, after a couple laps you'll be blowing your gear box out - that's how you know auto-clutch is off! When i first starting using paddles (was using manual+clutch for everything before that) I never set the auto clutch on. I was shifting using the paddles with no real clutch OR autoclutch without issues. First full damage race I was in my gearbox blew up after 2-3 laps. There were no other symptoms that no clutch was being used except that damage. Once I turned on auto clutch (again still for paddle shift), car behaved the same, but no gearbox damage.
