We have ran a few events now and the practice session does not log laps in the server logs. It records the best lap time but not the laps turned:

You can see from this log extract that the drivers have "best lap times" (so must have turned some laps) but no laps are recorded in "RaceSessionLaps" (confusing name for the section but in qualifying session laps are logged in the "RaceSessionLaps" section also).

Laps need to be logged so that incidents are recorded and so that people can see what they did when the logs are analysed.

What kind of "incidents" would occur during a practice session that require analysing a specific lap time? Just curious.

I'm not sure what you are asking? Racers want to be able to see lap times in practice. How they changed as they got used to the circuit and got better. Why would you NOT want to have the lap times and incidents. Without the data a wrecker could have joined and we have zero info about who they made contact with, etc etc.

The logs contain an "incidents" section for each lap that records contacts with cars, objects, cuts etc. THis section is part of the lap record. Without the laps being logged we do not have any incidents logged.

Image of qualifying laps with incidents. Note Incidents are part of the lap log entry:

I am one of the developers over at JustRace. JF and some of the beta testers have been working with us.

One of the big features that we are developing and caught the interest of JF was a safety rating.

We analyse the incident points that RaceRoom logs and grade people on those in terms of a safety rating.

As no laps are logged for practice, no incidents are logged and so no grading of that session can be done.

We score each session differently (so obviously practice session should have a lower impact, than qually and qually a lower impact than race). At the moment we can not grade practice at all as no laps are logged.

You might say practice is practice and you should not grade it. To counter this, a driver that has a poor safety rating should practice more. IF we are to see that they are improving we need logs from the practice laps. Without laps we can not improve their rating for turning clean practice laps.

It's hard to explain the detail but yes I think laps should be logged. The section is there (RaceSessionLaps) but it is empty. Only the "BestLapTime" is recorded and that does not contain the sector times either.

SO yes logging lap times in practice is important if only as a record of what happened. In terms of the system we are working on we need to analyse the incidents to grade drivers safety.
