R3E is not on dx11 and we haven't seen them doing much progress on any major gfx work, so I don't think it's realistic for R3E to have such features soonish. No idea if/when they intend to make the switch to unreal or another engine, or beef up theirs. Typically we embed our tech into unreal, so people don't have to do much work when using that engine. But given they said long term they are heading in this direction, it all depends on how "urgent" and "long term" your need is.

I'd still wait until prices get more sane for 1080. Card is sold out quickly everywhere, which doesn't help prices coming down, but it will get better. You could probably go for a 1070 as well and still have something that has more future tech in it and ~100 watts lower power consumption, more VRAM... at a similar perf and price to 980Ti.

It's all a matter of patience on this :) personally I would not invest in older technology when it's still not really cheap (new 980 ti is still 400+ €) Unless you say, well I can buy a new one again if needed.
Traditionally more products will have been produced and ready towards end of year, as everyone wants a piece of christmas or "back to school" sales. So if you can wait a few more months... I'd imagine you may save 100€ here or there and have a greater choice of custom boards for the new chips. At least that is my motivation to wait a bit longer.

I couldn't afford the GTX 1080 but did grab the little Sibling the GTX 1060 and have found it to be outstanding and over performing all expectations .
Able to run R3E at 3840x2160 @60fps v-sync and all but shadows maxed out .(medium).
All other games at around the same settings ( AC , The Forest , NMS , AMS , BeamNG , Crysis 3 and Battlefeild 1 Beta) , except Forza Apex Beta , only 1440p @90fps maxed due to Ram limitations . (need 16GB).
The only problem (quite annoying) with my GTX 1060 is there is something that makes my system crash in R3E , but only in the menu's (weird) . I can have a 3 hour gaming session in R3E if i stay out of the menu's . I have to make up a championship as quickly as possible , and hope for no crash (when i crashes it seems to go into stand-by and will restart in game where it left off) . While setting up the championship it may crash 2-3 times but once set i can do as many races as i can (time limited) with out any problems and it just looks and plays amazingly .
just can't go back to 1080p console gaming ever again .
So if this crashing issue can be resolved i will be the happiest little Aussie gamer ever .
Thank You Sector 3 for an amazing Sim and Thank You Nvidia for making 4K gaming affordable .

Oh and adjustable roll bars in cars would be great .

Maybe it could be something else with your system. I am presuming the 1080/1060 are the same apart from the 1060 not being as fast. I am on Windows 10 and never had a crash issue with my 1080. Have you checked your "event viewer" to see if there are any clues there?

That Event Viewer is hard to read , but yes there are clues there but i just don't know how to read it .

Hello All - I am currently running two GTX 970s in SLI, and I know SLI is not officially supported. I am getting good frame rates that I am happy with, but running two GTX 970s creates a lot of heat and power consumption and occasional BSOD. What results are you guys getting running a single GTX 1080 on triple screens? Should I make the move?

so far works great for me, often the gpu is only at 50℅ load ;) guess for my games the 1070 could have been enough, although I have greater reserve with 1080 and for VR it's also more practical.

I've been hearing recently that the 10 series GPUs aren't being used 100% yet, tested the theory yesterday while playing RUST, sure enough, the GPU barely broke a sweat (52% usage average with a spike of 96% and it was quite literally a millisecond spike), odd thing though, the FPS @ 2560x1080 (21:9) were all over the place and I'm actually being out-performed by guys with similar systems using GTX 970s at the moment and not just on RUST.

They will be if you throw enough eye candy at 'em, trust me.

I use DSR to run at 2880x1620 on a 1080p screen, add 8xMSAA + 8xSSAA + 16xAF on top, crank up all video settings (except rearview mirror quality) in R3E to the max and with 30 cars on track, my 1070 is under a constant 99-100% core load.
It still hardly breaks a sweat though: it pumps out 80-120 fps and never runs hotter than 60-62c. It definitely out-performs my "old" 970.

Same thing in AC, AMS, rF2 or pCars for that matter: no problem whatsoever to keep it under maximum load at all times.

    I've just replaced my 970 by a 1070 (running a X34 @3440x1440p)
I can run everything maxed out + big AA (something like S12x in nvidia inspector) except the shadows. As soon as I put them to High I have a massive FPS drop. For ex, I go under 50 against 20 IA at race start at spa. Otherwise it's always between 80 and 100 (with fps cap at 99 as the screen is 100Hz max)

Bought an RX480 for the time being, but with my currency's value plummeting I'm starting to regret not going for the more expensive option straight up!

Could you please spell out the nVidia Inspector setting for a Noob like me .Please .
I tried last night to up my AA settings in inspector and got a bsod ,still just learning all this pc stuff and my GTX 1060 seems to be coping well at 4K maxed , so would like to get a little better AA .
    Thanks .

I didn't do so much in NV inspector:
    - set a FPS limiter to cap it to the max refresh rate of my G-sync screen.
    - choose the antialiasing method to something (from my memories) like "12x (...)"
Everything else was done through the nvidia control panel (force AA to overrules the game settings, force Anisotropic filtering to 16x, max pre-render frame to 1.. that's all)

But if you're playing @ 4K reso with a 1060 I think it could struggle with too much AA.
the higher the res of the screen is, the difficult AA will be.
With the 970 I had to choose between some graphics eye candy and AA on my 1440p UW screen to keep the frame rate between 80 and 100. As 1060 and 970 are close performances wise, I don't think you'll be able to run R3E maxed at 4K with lots of AA. But as you're in 4K AA is less a need, maybe a 4x supersampling or even a 2x factor is enough for visual quality.

Ive got it at 8x multisampling and 4x supersampling @ 4K with v-sync on in control panel and its a smooth jitter free experience holding tight @ 59.9 fps but with the slightest hint of shimmer from some parts of tracks .
I do have shadows at medium and a grid of 25 but appart from that everything else is at there max .
The 1060 is closer to the 980 than the 970 plus i've got a pretty good oc going.

Got the very same card and have to agree, I'm running triples in 1080 @ 60 frames/sec with no stutters, so don't see the point of selling another internal organ just yet, do quite fancy a 1080 though, damn, just hide the scalpels for now and wait for the inevitable price drop next year, yippee, another Christmas with a whole Liver! :D

Im just trying to eliminate the little shimmer and trying to find the appropriate AA setting as i tried 16x CSAA in inspector and got a BSOD .
    Thanks anyway.
